Grace Is a Gift

A simple object lesson using a wrapped gift to help children understand that grace cannot be earned.

The big idea

Grace is God giving us a gift we could never earn. A wrapped box gives children something concrete to remember when the idea feels abstract.

What you need

  • A small wrapped gift
  • A volunteer who does not know what is inside
  • The printable reflection sheet, if desired

Teaching outline

Offer the gift to a volunteer, then ask what they did to earn it. Explore the difference between a wage and a gift. Read Ephesians 2:8–9 together and connect each part of the verse to what just happened.

Finish by asking: “If grace is a gift, how can we respond to the giver?” Invite answers such as gratitude, trust, and generosity toward others.

A question to carry home

Where did you notice an undeserved gift from God this week?
